What are varifocals?

Varifocals are lenses that let you see clearly at all distances — far, intermediate (such as screens) and near (such as reading) — through a single, seamless lens, with no visible line. They are ideal once reading glasses alone no longer keep up with everyday life.

Are more expensive varifocals worth it?

Sometimes — but not for the reasons you might think. What changes how a varifocal feels is the design, the width of the clear zones, how smoothly it moves between distances, and above all whether it was measured and fitted around you or left at the design's defaults. How long does it take to get used to varifocals?

Most people adapt within a few days to a couple of weeks. A precise fitting and the right lens design make a real difference here — and if anything does not feel right, we will check and adjust them for you.

Which varifocal lens is best for me?

There is no single best varifocal. Two people with the same prescription can need different configurations, because height, frame, working distances, screen use, driving and head movement all change what we would recommend. Can I get varifocal prescription sunglasses?

Yes. Varifocal lenses can be made as prescription sunglasses, including polarised and tinted options — ideal for driving and the outdoors. Ask us about a varifocal pair as part of an eyewear wardrobe.

Do you offer varifocals on the NHS?

An NHS sight test is funded in full where you are eligible, so there is nothing to pay for the examination itself. An NHS optical voucher may contribute towards lenses for some patients. We will explain your options and any contribution clearly before you decide.
