We take a look
We examine your ears with a video otoscope first, so both you and your clinician can see exactly what is there before anything happens.

We remove the wax
Where appropriate we clear it with gentle microsuction — no water, no flushing — watching the ear canal clearly the whole time.

You’re done
Most people notice an immediate improvement the moment the blockage is gone. Start to finish, the visit takes around 30 minutes.

Does it hurt?
No — microsuction is gentle and, for most people, completely painless. You will hear the suction for a moment, but there is no water, no flushing and no mess. If anything ever feels uncomfortable, we simply pause.
Is microsuction safe?
Yes — it is widely regarded as the gold standard for ear wax removal. Because we use gentle suction rather than water, we can see your ear canal clearly the whole time, so it is more controlled and suitable for people who cannot have syringing.
Do I need to use olive oil first?
It helps but is not essential. A few drops of olive oil (or a pharmacy softener) two to three times a day for three to five days beforehand makes removal quicker and even more comfortable. Please avoid cotton buds — they push wax deeper.
Can you treat both ears?
Yes — the appointment covers both ears. If only one needs clearing, that is fine too.
How long does it take?
Around 30 minutes, including a proper look inside your ears, the removal itself and a clear explanation of what we found.
What if there is no wax to remove?
We look first, and if there is little or no wax we will tell you honestly and not charge you for a procedure you do not need — then help you understand what is actually going on.
Can I have it done if I wear hearing aids?
Absolutely — hearing-aid wearers are some of the people who benefit most, as wax build-up is a common reason aids sound quiet or whistle. We will check and clear your ears so your aids work as they should.
How quickly can I get an appointment?

How do I know it is wax and not hearing loss?
You may not, and that is the point of looking. Wax tends to come on quickly and often affects one ear; age-related hearing loss comes on slowly and usually affects both. Looking inside answers it in about a minute, and we will tell you either way.
Please contact your GP or NHS 111 first if you have sudden hearing loss, severe pain, dizziness or discharge — these need attention sooner. Ear wax removal is for ages 18+.
