Hearing assessments and private hearing tests.

A relaxed hearing conversation at STOTTS.

When did conversations start becoming hard work?

It rarely arrives all at once. It's the restaurant where you smile and nod because the background noise has swallowed half the table. The television creeping up a few notches until someone asks you to turn it down. The constant "sorry, say that again?" you've started to apologise for.

Hearing changes are gradual, and most people live with them far longer than they need to. A hearing assessment is simply a calm, thorough way to understand what's actually going on — and what, if anything, is worth doing about it.

Book a Hearing Assessment

Where to start

A hearing check, or a full hearing assessment?

There are two ways to begin with us, and both are completely free. The right one simply depends on how much you'd like to understand.

30 minutes

The hearing check

A focused screening and ear health check. We look inside your ears, test your hearing across the key frequencies and tell you clearly whether everything looks healthy — or whether a fuller assessment would help.

Ideal for peace of mind, or as a first step.

90 minutes

The full hearing assessment

A longer, in-depth appointment with an audiologist. Alongside a full diagnostic hearing test, we assess how well you understand speech, how you cope in background noise and how your hearing fits your daily life.

A complete hearing loss assessment — the detail behind any recommendation.

What happens during your appointment

There's nothing clinical or intimidating about it. A typical appointment includes:

  • A proper conversation — your concerns, your lifestyle and the situations you find hardest
  • A look inside your ears with a video otoscope, so you can see your own ear health on screen
  • A diagnostic hearing test across the pitches and volumes that matter most for speech
  • Speech and background-noise testing, to understand how well you actually follow conversation
  • A clear, jargon-free explanation of your results and what they mean for you

You'll never be rushed, and you'll never be handed a decision you don't understand.

Hearing well is about understanding, not just volume.

Plenty of hearing tests stop at whether you can detect a beep. But real hearing happens in noisy rooms, across a dinner table, with several people talking at once.

That's why we place as much importance on how clearly you understand speech — and how you cope when there's background noise — as we do on the tones you can hear. It's often the first thing to change, and the thing that affects daily life most. Measuring it properly is what turns a set of numbers into advice that reflects how you actually live.

Who should consider a hearing assessment?

It's worth booking if any of these feel familiar:

  • Conversations are harder to follow, especially in groups or noisy places
  • You turn the television up more than others would like
  • You often ask people to repeat themselves
  • You can hear people talking, but can't always make out the words
  • You notice ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus)
  • You feel drained after a day of listening and socialising
  • You simply haven't had your hearing checked in a while

If you're 55 or over, a hearing check every couple of years is as sensible as an eye test — even when nothing feels wrong.

Discussing hearing assessment results

What happens after your assessment

We'll talk you through exactly what we found, in plain language, and what it means for your day-to-day hearing. Then you decide what happens next — in your own time.

  • Reassurance — often your hearing is healthy and nothing needs doing
  • A simple fix — sometimes it's wax, and a quick earwax removal appointment is all that's needed
  • A conversation about support — if it would genuinely help, we'll talk through modern hearing aids

Whatever we find, there's never any pressure — just honest advice and the time to think it over.

Hearing assessment questions, answered.

How much does a hearing assessment cost?

Nothing. Both our 30-minute hearing check and our full diagnostic hearing assessment are completely complimentary, with no obligation to proceed.

What is the difference between a hearing check and a full hearing assessment?

A hearing check is a focused 30-minute screening and ear health check. A full hearing assessment is a longer, in-depth appointment with an audiologist that includes diagnostic testing, speech and background-noise assessment and personalised guidance — a complete hearing loss assessment.

Is this a private hearing test?

Yes. STOTTS. is an independent practice, so you are seen promptly by an experienced audiologist, given as much time as you need and never rushed. Our private hearing tests are free of charge.

How long does a hearing assessment take?

A hearing check takes around 30 minutes. A full hearing assessment takes around 90 minutes, so we can properly understand both your hearing and your lifestyle without any rush.

Will I need a hearing aid?

Not necessarily. Many people leave simply reassured, or needing nothing more than earwax removal. If hearing aids would genuinely help, we will explain exactly why — but the decision is always yours.

Should I have a hearing test if I have tinnitus?

Yes. If you notice ringing or buzzing in your ears, a hearing assessment is a sensible first step to understand what is behind it and how we can help.

How often should I have my hearing checked?

If you are over 55, roughly every two years is sensible — much like an eye test. If you have noticed changes, do not wait; book a check whenever something feels different.
