About STOTTS. · Accessibility

An accessible website is part of accessible care.

We look after people's eyes and ears for a living. Many of the people we serve live with low vision, colour vision differences, hearing loss or reduced dexterity — so a website that is hard to see, hear or operate isn't an abstract failing to us. It's personal. We hold this site to the same standard as the care in our practices.

Our commitment

We are working to WCAG 2.2 level AA.

We build and maintain this website against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA — the standard referenced by the UK Equality Act 2010. This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 level AA: most of it meets the standard, and the parts that do not are listed below rather than left for you to discover.

We review the site against the standard when we change it, and we test with a keyboard, at 200% zoom, and with automated contrast checks. We have not yet commissioned an independent audit by a specialist accessibility organisation, and we would rather say so than imply one.

What we've done

How the site is built to work for you.

  • Readable colour. Text and buttons are checked against WCAG AA contrast ratios, so copy stays legible for low-vision and colour-blind readers.
  • Full keyboard operation. Every menu, link, button and form can be used without a mouse. A visible focus outline always shows where you are, and a "Skip to content" link lets keyboard users jump past the navigation.
  • Screen-reader friendly. Pages use proper landmarks and a single, logical heading order; images that carry meaning have descriptive text, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
  • Motion you can stop. If your device is set to reduce motion, animations and background video are stilled automatically. There is also a pause control on the home page's background video and in the footer of every page, so you can stop it whether or not your device is set that way. Your choice is remembered.
  • Anything that moves on its own can be stopped. The rotating reviews on the home page have their own pause button, stop when you hover or tab into them, and follow the site-wide motion setting. The same applies anywhere else content advances by itself.
  • Form errors tell you which box. When something is missing, the field is marked, the reason is written beside it, and your cursor moves to the first one that needs fixing, so it is not a general "something went wrong".
  • Nothing loads before you say so. Analytics, advertising measurement and our chat assistant only run if you accept cookies, and you can withdraw that at any time using "Cookie settings" in the footer.
  • Resizable and responsive. Text reflows and stays usable when you zoom to 200% or browse on a phone; nothing is locked to a fixed size.
  • Easy to reach us. Phone numbers are tap-to-call on mobile, and a clear booking and contact route is always available.

Where we know we can do better

Known limitations.

These are the specific things we know do not yet meet the standard. None of them stops you booking an appointment or reaching us.

  • Our chat assistant is built by a third party and we cannot change its markup. Its send button has no accessible name and its text box has no visible label, which fails WCAG 4.1.2 and 3.3.2. It only loads if you accept cookies, and everything it offers can be done by phone, email or our contact form. We have raised this with the supplier.
  • Embedded maps come from Google and are not fully within our control. Every practice page also lists its full address and a "Get directions" link, and we are happy to give directions by phone.
  • Images on some pages do not declare their dimensions, so the page can shift slightly as they load. We are working through these.
  • Images are not yet served at the size your screen needs. Every photograph is sent at full size, which is slower on a phone or a metered connection than it should be. Nothing is unreadable because of it, but it is not good enough and it is the next thing we are doing.
  • Some downloadable documents (PDFs) are not yet tagged for screen readers, which fails WCAG 1.3.1 for those files. Ask us and we will provide the information in another format, normally the same day.
  • Video clips used as background or atmosphere carry no captions. They contain no speech or information — they are decorative — but if any clip ever does carry meaning we will caption it.

If you find something we have not listed, please tell us. We treat it as a fault, not a request, and we will tell you when it is fixed.

Need something in a different format?

Tell us — we'll sort it.

If any part of this website is difficult to use, or you'd like information in large print, by email, or read aloud over the phone, please get in touch. We'll help, and we'll use what you tell us to make the site better.
