Why it happens
A general-purpose progressive is built around the thing you do most of the time with your eyes open: looking across a room and down a road. That zone takes the top of the lens and most of its width.
The near zone at the bottom is calculated around close reading — roughly 40 cm, held in your hands, with your eyes dropped. It is narrow by design, because a wide near zone would cost you somewhere else.
A monitor sits at roughly 70–90 cm. That is the intermediate corridor — the narrowest working part of the lens, and the part an everyday design gives away first. Nothing has gone wrong. The lens is doing what it was designed to do, at a distance it was not designed around.

The tell
Blur is not usually what brings someone in — the workarounds are. They are worth saying out loud, because each one tells us where the current lens is being asked to do a job it was not set up for.
Sore eyes and a stiff neck at the end of a screen day are usually the posture, not the eyes — you have been holding your head where the lens is clear rather than where you are comfortable.
The common misreading
The instinct is to assume the lens has been under-corrected — that a bit more reading power would sharpen the screen. It rarely works that way. A stronger reading addition makes the near zone stronger rather than wider, and it lands lower in the lens, so the monitor becomes harder to find, not easier. The intermediate corridor narrows as the addition rises.
What changes the answer is the working distance itself. An occupational design is calculated around the distance you actually work at, so the widest, most usable part of the lens sits where your screen already is — instead of you moving your head until the screen finds the lens.
If distance itself has changed — road signs, faces, the far side of a room — that is a different conversation, and it belongs in an eye examination before any lens. When the honest answer is a check before any lens: a reported change in vision, distance clarity on the road, someone who wears nothing yet, an area we can see but cannot size, or several answers you were not sure about.
Office lenses or varifocals?
“Office lenses” is a category, not a lens. The Nikon Lenswear Dispensing Guide 2026 sets out three occupational designs, separated by how far away the furthest thing you need to see actually is. Before any of them, the plain limit comes first.

The honest trade-off: a general-purpose lens will still be a compromise for your working day compared with a pair made for it. We would show you the difference rather than claim it.

Why the measurement matters
An occupational lens has a near zone that has to be moved inwards, because your eyes converge as they come closer. How far inwards depends on three things — and the Nikon Lenswear Dispensing Guide 2026 prints a chart to read it off: your monocular pupillary distance, the power in your distance prescription, and the working distance you actually use.
Two of those come from your prescription and your face. The third is the one most often left at a default — and it is the one that decides whether the clear part of the lens lands on your screen or slightly behind it. So we measure it, at your desk height, with your own frame on.
The ranges a position-of-wear design accepts
These are the ranges the lens design accepts, not your values. Yours are measured in practice, where the design accepts them — never left at the defaults.

Because a monitor at roughly 70–90 cm sits in the intermediate corridor — the narrowest working part of an everyday progressive, which prioritises distance at the top and close reading at the bottom. The lens is behaving exactly as designed; the desk is simply not the distance it was designed around.

Many people do, and if your screen is clear and comfortable we would leave things exactly as they are. The habits are the tell — the chin lift, the head turn, the hunt for the clear bit.
